On April 6, students took part in the district level of academic UIL, a competition consisting of a variety of academic events, ranging from science to social studies to poetry interpretation.
As a whole, the team placed second. Several specialized teams took first place in their respective events: calculator applications, computer science, science, social studies and journalism. The journalism team in particular, which is scored as a whole based on placements in individual events, achieved a staggering 107-point lead and had a competitor take first place in each journalism event.
“I felt very proud because I’ve seen how we’ve all improved as writers this year,” Pragnya Kaginele (11), who placed first in editorial writing and second in both feature and news writing, said. “And to take top spots in every event showed such growth from when I first joined the team two years ago, when there were only three competitors.”
Competitors who placed first through third will advance to the region round on April 26-27 at Rock Hill High School.
