The Carroll football program, as well as the athletic department as a whole, was impacted by the resignation of head coach and athletic director Riley Dodge last month. The community was eager for news of a new coach, and on Feb 2, defensive coordinator Lee Munn was officially appointed the position.
”Coach Munn is the perfect fit for our kids, coaches and our community,” Jenny Suitor, acting athletic director said. “He knows our kids, he knows the expectations and he knows the standards. He’s going to lead a very good program. They’re going to be set up for success.”
The district is still discerning how to move forward with the athletic director role, as Suitor was previously the assistant and has taken over all duties until further notice.
”We have certain sayings like, the standard is the standard, no fear of failure and protect tradition,” Suitor said. “I think all of those are going to be very stable, and carry on through Coach Munn. He knows what that means to be a Dragon.”
There was plenty of speculation that Dodge’s position would be granted to a current member of the staff, and sure enough, they chose Munn who had been essential to the Dragon defense’s success for eight years.
”When [my family and I] were discussing [the position] and talking about whether or not we would go for it, at the forefront of my wife and I’s thought process was, this is going to set up our kid’s future,” Munn said. “We all know that the education they’re going to get going through Carroll is second to none. That was kind of the driving force.”
Munn’s career has consisted of 17 years of coaching at both the collegiate and high school levels.
“You always want to be at a place where it’s expected to win a lot of football games,” Munn said. “I was at Marble Falls for a year and they didn’t have the same expectations. It was just hard to be in a place where their culture wasn’t already set. We know what the demand is here, and that’s the kind of environment that we want to be in.”
The team is well acquainted with the standard established, and the tradition continues as qualified coaches are appointed.
“The kids are so great here,” Munn said. “It really starts with their effort and work ethic. The biggest thing that I’ve learned in years here is there’s a misconception about who our kids are and what they’re about. From the outside, it’s ‘they’re wealthy’ and ‘they get things handed to them’, but it’s really the exact opposite. They work for every single thing that they do. We are not a white collar program, we’re a blue collar. We have really, really tough kids who love to compete.”
The districts were recently realigned for the 2026-27 school year, allowing for another highly competitive schedule for the football program. With Boswell High School added into the mix, and Byron Nelson returning to district play from 6A division one, the 2027 season will be highly competitive.
“We have full faith in [Coach Munn],” junior quarterback Palmer Pensom said. “We’re gonna be great and we all know it. We have a hard schedule but were not scared of it. Coach Munn will lead us the right way and we’re going to get it done.”
