cuwhenicu – Diz
“Livin’ like I’m jet-lagged/Lookin’ like I’m livin’ for a getback”
Where This Flower Blooms – Tyler, The Creator, Frank Ocean
“I’m leanin’ out the window/OJ shinin’ on me/Simp-sun shining on me”
TEXAS BLUE – Quadeca, Kevin Abstract
“I’ll be honest/You like movies more than I do/But who asked you?”
Arden’s Picks
“Juliet” – Cavetown
“Sometimes I act like I know, but I’m really just a kid / with two corks in his eyes and a bully in his head”
I just think this song is fun. It has upbeat, almost 8-bit-sounding at times, music combined with more meaningful, less upbeat lyrics.
“I’d Rather Be Me” – from “Mean Girls”
“I’ll say, ‘no,’ I’ll say, ‘knock it off,’ with your notes and your rules and your games / and those sycophants who follow you, I’ll remember all their names / and when they drag you down like they inevitably do / I will not laugh along with them and approve their palace coup / ‘Cause that’s not me”
This is currently my favorite song ever. Even just typing the lyrics makes me feel empowered.
“Stranger” – Olivia Rodrigo
“I cried a million rivers for you but that’s over now / You’re just a stranger I know everything about”
“Stranger” is a lovely, bittersweet song.
Joe’s Picks
“Come Down Soon” – Lizzy McAlpine
“Someone opens a window, music spills onto the dirt / But we stand here in the freezing cold / And wonder who will kiss who first”
This is both a sad song and a seemingly hopeful one, and its acoustic instrumental just elevates it that much more.
“Pool” – Still Woozy, Remi Wolf
“I don’t really know where my heads at / I just know my heart’s not there yet / Or maybe I’m just crazy / About the thought of thinking I adore you”
This is probably one of my favorite songs of all time, and has a great contrast between the sad lyrics and the brightly colored cover and instrumentals.
“Mary’s Song (Oh My My My)” – Taylor Swift
“She said, I was seven and you were nine / I looked at you like the stars that shine / In the sky, the pretty lights / And our daddies used to joke about the two of us / Growing up and falling in love and our mamas smiled / And rolled their eyes and said oh my my my”
“Mary’s Song” is just a solid, cute love song that I love to play with the windows rolled down.
“Heart of Gold (with Bon Iver)” – Ilsey, Bon Iver
“I wanna live, I wanna give / I’ve been a miner for a heart of gold / It’s these expressions I’ll never give / Keep me searching for a heart of gold”
I recently rediscovered this song, and it’s a really easy listen. Ilsey’s vocals along with Bon Iver’s are great, and I love the melody.
“It Was Coming All Along” – Maggie Rogers
“And I don’t know just what to do / I’m fine but feel I’m breaking through / My world’s a honey shade of blue”
Pretty much every song off of this album is perfect for spring, but the imagery Rogers’ conjures is so awesome in this song.
Katherine’s Picks
VCR – Tyler, The Creator
“Press my buttons baby”
Tyler, The Creator has great, chill songs to play in the background. This song comes from Odd Future, a rap collective from the early 2010s that has some of his best songs.
Swim Good – Frank Ocean
“I’m trynna swim from something bigger than me”
This is one of my favorite Frank Ocean songs, and it just captures the vibe of spring/summer.
Poison – Brent Faiyaz
“Girl you do damage to me”
I love the slow vibe to this song; it reminds me of summer nights and late night car rides.
Addisyn’s Picks
“Come a Little Closer” – Cage the Elephant
“Ten thousand people stand-alone now/ And in the evening the sun sank”
This song has always been my favorite, I love the beat, melody, and the story.
“505” – Arctic Monkeys
“The middle of adventure /Such a perfect place to start”
I remember finding this song 4 years ago and it became one of my favorite songs to cry too.
“911 / Mr. Lonely” – Tyler The Creator (feat. Frank Ocean & Steve Lacy)
“I’m the loneliest man alive”
My personal TikTok Demon sent this song to me.
Christine’s Picks
“Steeeam” – Shelly
“I’m staring at walls, I swear on my life that paint dries quicker than this”
I discovered this song from clicking on random stuff on Spotify and it turned out to be a bop.
“Lucky Girl Syndrome” – ILLIT
“I don’t need, I don’t need, I don’t need any golden ticket/ All I need, all I need, all I need is to believe in myself”
I’ve been listening to this song on repeat lately, mostly because I liked the upbeat melody and I need to manifest some sort of “lucky girl syndrome” in order to survive AP exam season.
Suhavi’s Picks
“Needed Me” – Rihanna
This song just gives spring vibes. It’s not gloomy but it’s not super upbeat. Needed my had the perfect melody for spring.
“Let Em’ Know” – Bryson Tiller
This song has an upbeat vibe. It reminds me of a song you play when the sun is shining bright in the sky. It’s perfect for spring.
Brown’s Picks
“But Daddy I Love Him” – Taylor Swift
This song has been stuck in my head since I heard it on the day of the album release. It’s just so catchy.
“Florida!!!” – Taylor Swift, Florence + The Machine
I hated this song on first listen, but I love Florence’s voice and the drums in the chorus force me to scream-sing along. And if anything screams spring break or summer, it’s Florida.
“Move Like U Stole It” – ZZ Ward
It’s an older album, but something about her voice just hooks me. The entire Til the Casket Drops album is good. Her southern rock, gritty blues sound is so unique and puts me in a roll-the-windows-down and drive mood.
“A Southern Thing” – Better Than Ezra
Along the same lines as ZZ Ward, BTE’s sound just feels like the weather is warming up and things are moving toward a more relaxed time of year. And I love a story-song.
