Foundations

A look into the works, inspirations of students

December 3, 2015

For two weeks in November, students and parents alike were invited to visit the Gallery at the back of the Fine Arts building to see the “Foundations” Art show, which featured 150 pieces from over 60 students. This opportunity allowed Art students involved in the exhibit, to see their work first displayed as part of the show, and now as part of Dragon Media.

“Bars,” Ciara Smith – AP Drawing

“I’m very proud of my piece ‘Bars,’ because it’s a very expressive use of the element of line, which fits in perfectly with the show’s theme, Foundations. It’s been awesome opening this show with my classmates in Art, especially because, for many of them, this is their first show.”

“Lexi,” Jess Filiaggi – AP 3D Art

“My favorite self-made piece would be Lexi, because of how it encompasses women’s beauty. I wanted the light shining behind the marks to be warm and show the beauty women have; it turns something we view as negative into something beautiful.”

“Oh, right” Gabi Smith – AP 2D Art

“My favorite self-made piece is Oh, right. It’s about what it’s like to feel scattered within yourself, but knowing you need to be out together. I was really excited about the opening of the show because they give an opportunity for people to have their talents appreciated, as well as a sense of unity in the Art department itself.”

“Colony Collapse Disorder” Soumya Baskar – AP 2D Design

“My favorite piece is ‘Colony Collapse Disorder,’ which is a disorder in which bees leave their hives due to pesticides. I enjoyed making this because I feel like my research on the subject came across to the viewers, as well as the composition of the piece. The show was really fun and I enjoyed it a lot, especially because everyone else has so many wonderful ideas and you get to see how hard we’ve been working on our pieces for the first time!”

“La Losérs” JC Patino – AP Drawing, Fashion Design

“My favorite self-made piece in the show was “La Losérs. It was one of the most personal paintings I’ve ever made because it showed that you can make a strong piece of art while showing your sense of humor at the same time- something which I don’t see often enough in other art. The shows always get great turnouts of people who come and show their enthusiasm about all the art, which in turns motivates all of us to keep making more.”

The Gallery accepts submissions from all CSHS students, as long as the criteria – which depends on the show – is met. These are just a few of the stories the Fine Arts building houses in the form of paintings, sculptures, and photography.

Although the Foundations show has come and gone, the AP show will open for viewing in January.

“To be able to have this space and these shows is to be able to see a work from beginning to end,” Art teacher Eric Horn said. “That is always satisfying.”
