How to see life through a lens

Ways to capture moments in focus

February 21, 2018

The simple “click” of the shutter holds onto a moment. A split second in time, a simple photograph that will always be remembered.

Photography is a way to capture the most intricate parts of your day, week, month, or even year. It helps you see the world with a new and different perspective, yet many people don’t know how to get the best out of every shot. Here are some tips to improve your pictures.

Shoot From Different Angles

One of the best ways to get the most creative shots is to take multiple photos of a subject from different views and angles. For example, neutral, the most common, is at eye level. Then, you have 45-degree angle, that faces down on the subject, or bird’s eye view, which comes directly over the subject. Here are some examples:

Fill the Frame

If you have multiple objects or subjects in your photos, especially props, then the best way to take your photo to the next level is to not leave any blank space in your frame. Try to fill up the edges by putting props around the border, or cut part of the props out so it shows the audience that there is more beyond this photo. Here is an example:

Straight Lines vs. Curves

To help add composition and depth to your photos, add lines or curves to your photos. Straight lines give a sense of masculinity because they are more harsh and direct. Curves are more feminine, and they are more soft. Curves are seen more often in food photography, as it creates a softer tone that makes food look more appealing and beautiful. Straight lines are used in other genres of photography and they are often used in more simple photography that is less artistic and more straightforward. Here are some examples:

Overall, photography is a great tool to express your emotions and to capture some of the most memorable moments of your life. Remember, practicing is the best way to explore photography and increase your creativity. So, grab your camera, a couple of friends, and begin your adventure together.
