“Project Hail Mary” directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, was released in theaters on March 20, 2026 and is now available to stream. The movie, produced by the original novel’s author, Andy Weir, is a new-age epic comedic science fiction movie with an unforgettable bond between two characters: Grace, a molecular biologist who teaches science, and Rocky, an alien engineer. The film projected the feeling of time slipping away perfectly, as both Grace and Rocky had to save the world under immense pressure. “Project Hail Mary” exemplifies the passion and love that goes into making sci-fi films, as shown by how well the characters are portrayed through an unexpected journey.
Dr. Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, is a nerdy science teacher with a degree in microbiology. I never imagined Gosling for a role like this, but he managed to win me over with how unexpectedly naturally he played Grace. His portrayal of the character is remarkable as Grace’s constant wit and nerdiness are brought out extensively. Gosling brought Grace to life by playing with his humorous demeanor and portraying Grace’s inner nerdiness, shown in Grace’s vlog tapes in the Hail Mary ship, as he studies Rocky’s habits while he cracks jokes. Gosling portrays Grace’s vulnerability beautifully, showing his fragility to the situation, especially when Stratt, the head of the international task force for the Hail Mary, had forced him to replace the scientific expert on the mission at the last minute. Grace’s emotions were very refreshing. Instead of being the cliche “perfect hero,” always ready to jump into a fight, Grace’s reluctance shows his flaws and makes him human. When he was forced into the Hail Mary, he had to grow as a person to help save the Earth.
The bond between Grace and Rocky is unforgettable. An alien and human friendship is something that isn’t a common occurrence in movies, as aliens are often portrayed as villains. The communication between the two is unique as Grace brings in his knowledge of teaching and critical thinking to translate the alien’s native Erid language. Both characters are isolated from their home planets with pressure to save their species, making them trauma-bonded because of a life-or-death situation. The tension of the situation along with their mutual interest in science makes Rocky and Grace feel comfortable enough to share their life stories and connect. Even when Grace had a moment to go home and save his planet, he went back to warn and save Rocky. Even though it was risky, Rocky was more important to him. That is what got me. Or when, at the end of the movie, Grace wants to stay on Rocky’s planet Erid instead of going back to Earth. The platonic love they shared for each other is a reminder that we all need a friendship like Grace and Rocky had.
The artistry in Project Hail Mary complements the heartfelt expression of the movie. Giving an out-of-this-world experience to the audience from the color grade in the flashbacks to the space setting. This compliments the film very well as it gives people an appreciation of the universe beyond us. Green screens were not used and the ship was physically built by a team. I appreciate the background work on this movie so much, especially with people watching AI videos and the often talked about fear that AI will take over entertainment. The amount of extra effort put into it made me overjoyed. I want this to have the same impact on viewers that I had, seeing the visuals and all the artwork on the movie for what it is.
Rocky was brought to life as a puppet who was played by James Ortiz. I never thought Rocky was a puppet. I thought they just used CGI for him. Ortiz was also Rocky’s voice actor, which amazed me a lot since he was basically multitasking the whole movie. I hope to see Ortiz being acknowledged for his work in next year’s award season. In a Variety interview with Ortiz, he said, “Actor to actor, I didn’t want Ryan to ever feel like he was alone in this.” Both Gosling and Ortiz spent time bonding off-set to create the wonderful friendship in the film.
“Project Hail Mary” has had outstanding success, being the number one opening, making $80 million. This makes “Project Hail Mary” the 2nd-biggest debut movie of the year, behind “Mario Super Galaxy.” The movie has an outstanding rating on Rotten Tomatoes with 94%. Amazon MGM has passed 500 million dollars, which makes “Project Hail Mary” the studio’s highest-grossing film, passing the original holder of this record, “Creed III.” The full praise for the movie was Amazon’s focus on the theatrical presence and release, rather than just moving straight to streaming on Prime Video.
Project Hail Mary brought back cinema with the extensive work done on the movie, giving it a $500 million box office success. The astounding feel of the film, with the comedy and deeply relatable character. The film ignited a greater appreciation for sci-fi and the wonderful joy of outer space.
