The annual College Fair will be hosted at the CSHS Basketball gyms from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 24. Students can register using the QR code on posters around the school or through the link sent to their school email.
Ms. Trisha Uhler, counselor coordinator, has been working on organizing the college fair, which will have around 100 colleges from across the country
“Don’t be afraid to stop by a few tables of schools you aren’t familiar with,” Uhler said. “You may find a school you love that you’ve never heard of before.”
Behavior while meeting a college representative can also be an important factor when coming to the college fair.
“Take some quick notes while you are talking to the representative or right before you go to the next table because they will start to run together,” Uhler said.
It is important to make a good impression on college representatives by keeping a professional style when conversing. This can be started by having open communication with representatives and an established introduction
“Smile, say your name, grade level and what you want to study in college,” Uhler said. “Lastly, say thank you, and if you are really interested in the school, especially if they track demonstrated interest, send a quick thank you note after the fair and refer back to what you talked about.”
When coming to the college fair, researching colleges can help students find their perfect fit.
“I’ve tried to research some medical programs like the Bachelor of Science/Medical Doctor program and also looked mainly at UT, A&M and Purdue so far,” junior Suaani Askter said.
Senior Isha Sharma recommends never to limit yourself to colleges that have big names; always be curious and look around the gym instead of sticking to just one or two big-name colleges.
“Every college has its strengths and its weaknesses, and it’s really important to make sure you’re picking the college that is right for your specialty and not just overall good,” Sharma said.
Uhler advises that students bring notepads to write down advice and ask questions to learn about student life and what departments colleges specialize in.
“You should look through the list of colleges before you arrive to pick a few that you definitely want to talk to,” Uhler said. “Focus on ones that you are less likely to visit in person or that you don’t know as much about.”
