Estudar em uma escola dos Estados Unidos como estrangeiro pode ser uma experiência enriquecedora, mas também repleta de desafios. Eu me mudei para o Texas há um mês atrás, e o primeiro e mais difícil obstáculo era a barreira linguística. A dificuldade em compreender o inglês, seja nas aulas, nas conversas, ou até mesmo em situações simples, como pedir ajuda, gera insegurança e pode comprometer o desempenho escolar. Essa limitação linguística não apenas dificulta a comunicação, mas também impede que o estudante expresse plenamente sua personalidade e habilidades, o que pode gerar um sentimento de isolamento. Eu acho que minha maior frustração aqui é a comunicação. Falar e escutar uma língua que não é a sua língua nativa é cansativo e pode ser um dos maiores desafios. Mas não menos importante, a saudade dos seus amigos e família em casa é enorme e outro grande desafio.
Studying at a US school as a foreigner can be an enriching experience, but it is also fraught with challenges. I moved to Texas from Brazil a month ago, and the first and most difficult obstacle was the language barrier. Difficulty understanding English, whether in class, in conversations, or even in simple situations like asking for help, can create insecurity and compromise academic performance. This linguistic limitation not only hinders communication but also prevents students from fully expressing their personality and abilities, which can lead to feelings of isolation. I think my biggest frustration here is communication. Speaking and listening to a language that isn’t your native language is tiring and can be one of the biggest challenges. But no less important, missing your friends and family back home is enormous and another big challenge.
Além da questão da língua, muitos estrangeiros enfrentam preconceito. A diferença de sotaque, de aparência ou de hábitos culturais pode ser motivo de discriminação, direta ou indireta. Alguns colegas me olharam com estranheza ou trataram de forma inferior por não me encaixar nos padrões locais, pela língua ou pelo meu lugar de origem. Esse tipo de exclusão social afeta a autoestima e pode fazer com que o aluno se sinta deslocado em um ambiente que deveria ser de aprendizado e acolhimento. Mesmo que seja difícil, é importante que o aluno continue tentando se comunicar. O isolamento pode ser seu maior inimigo. É difícil ser uma pessoa comunicativa em outro idioma, saber se expressar e não se sentir envergonhado por não ser tão bom no idioma. Mas, se você se comunicar, estará aprimorando seu inglês e fazendo novas amizades, reduzindo seus sentimentos de solidão.
Beyond the language issue, many foreigners face prejudice. Differences in accent, appearance, or cultural customs can be grounds for direct or indirect discrimination. Some classmates looked at me strangely or treated me inferiorly because I didn’t fit into local standards, because of the language, or because of my place of origin. This type of social exclusion affects self-esteem and can make students feel out of place in an environment that should be one of learning and acceptance. Even if it’s difficult, students need to keep trying to communicate. Isolation can be their greatest enemy. It’s difficult to be a communicative person in another language, to know how to express yourself, and not feel ashamed for not being so good at the language. But if you communicate, you will be improving your English and making new friends, reducing your feelings of loneliness.
Entretanto, apesar das dificuldades, essa experiência também proporciona crescimento pessoal. O estudante estrangeiro desenvolve independência, aprende a lidar com a diversidade e a superar obstáculos que vão muito além da sala de aula. A adaptação exige coragem, paciência e esforço contínuo, mas, com o tempo, é possível criar laços de amizade, melhorar o domínio da língua e conquistar o respeito dos demais. Eu, por exemplo, fiz amizades que me ajudam a me sentir melhor e menos sozinha, podendo ter com quem conversar nos almoços e passear durante os finais de semana.
However, despite the difficulties, this experience is also providing me with personal growth. International students develop independence, learn to deal with diversity, and overcome obstacles that extend far beyond the classroom. Adaptation requires courage, patience, and continued effort, but over time, it’s possible to create bonds of friendship, improve language proficiency, and earn the respect of others. I, for example, have made friends who help me feel better and less alone, being able to have someone to talk to at lunch and go out with on the weekends.
Portanto, ser estrangeiro em uma escola norte-americana é um processo desafiador, que envolve não apenas a adaptação ao idioma, mas também a superação de barreiras culturais e sociais. Apesar das dificuldades, essa vivência já está sendo uma oportunidade única de amadurecimento, aprendizado e valorização da diversidade para mim e para outros estrangeiros.
Therefore, being a foreigner in a North American school is a challenging process, which involves not only adapting to the language but also overcoming cultural and social barriers. Despite the difficulties, this experience has already been a unique opportunity for maturity, learning, and appreciation of diversity for me and other foreigners.
