Carroll Senior High School students and faculty donated blood in the auxiliary gym on Sept. 5 as part of a donation “Blood Battle” with Byron Nelson High School.
“I think, officially, we had just over 200 [donors] that signed up for appointments, which is our largest to date, as far as I’ve been here, really,” student council advisor Lindsey Jacobson said.
In total, the Carroll community raised 107 whole blood donations, nine red blood cell donations, and ten plasma donations, and every donation saves approximately three lives. Student Council organized and oversaw the process, ensuring that every student had a safe way to contribute blood.
“We helped provide the food so people wouldn’t faint, like when you get your blood drawn, because obviously it’s a lot on your body, and then just like organizing it and promoting it at school,” member Sanaa Sanders said.
Many students participated in order to receive a red cord at graduation, which signifies two attempts to give blood. Others donated to help CSHS compete against Byron Nelson for which school could provide the most units of blood. The winner will be announced at the varsity Dragon football game on Friday, Sept. 13.
“Last year, Byron Nelson won by four total units, which really comes down to one donor, really,” Jacobsen said. “So we’re hoping that this year we’ll get to take the trophy back.”
